while driving the pedal went hard then went back to normal.

STOP NOW... YOU HAVE A LIFE TIME WARRANTY ON THAT SYSTEM.. I'm NOT kidding..
Also have a 1990 and replaced now three times...

check for recalls on that year/make/model. pretty sure chrysler issued one related to the ABS system
