If subaru have a hystory of `head gasket failure` for many years, why haven`t they fixed the problem ?
refer to subaru outback,2003 3.o ltr,6 cyl, has been warned by a suby mechanic in newcastle australia,a bloke who specialised in subaru,racing,/,general drivers & from the early models leonie, sportswagon, brumby ute, the head gasket was the 1st thing checked, most times I took a suby there to check out pre sale, just a listen as the car was driven into the workshop, the diagnosis had been already done by my gun mechanic, has the `head gasket problem been fixed?
i`ve had no prob`s still, fantastic car to drive,

The problem has been fixed starting with the 05 models. The six cylinder models don't have that problem.

As long as they'll go long enough to get out of the warranty period, most car manufacturers do not give a damn about fixing anything.
People continue to purchase Subarus like they're going out of style.
I'd like an Impreza WRX myself, but I do not really need one.

I have never heard of any 3.0L having blown head gaskets.
In 2001 when they 1st came out in the US I replaced many timing chain tensioners, but never any head gaskets. Keep up with the maintence per the holders manual and the engine will be just good.

Why have not they fixed the problem? Well, really, they already have. it is not likely that a 2003 Outback 3.0 will have head gasket problems.
And there is not really a big history of head gasket failures either. Subaru's 3.0 L and recent SOHC 2.5 L engines aren't recognized for head gasket problems, and their 2.2 L engine from the 1990s is widely regarded as bulletproof.
Head gaskets were only a notable problem in early DOHC 2.5 L engines used in the late 1990s, where interior head gasket failure obliged costly repairs. While stories of head gasket failures with this engine are pretty common, the failure rate isn't extreme.
Some post 2000 SOHC 2.5 L engines had external head gasket failures, but they were easy to diagnose and cheap to fix.
