If you're to get involved with restoration you may want to join up with rennlist.com all Porsche people, useful. They have a forum where many of your questions are already answered, and they have a used parts part great for looking into what you may want to do for your 944.

Is the pick up connected in the distributor? that's my 1st guess. No signal to fire from there.

Well, of course it may be the coil itself. but, 1st make sure you aren't shorting the electrical system to ground someplace else. Any plug wire, the points system, or just a bare wire will draw the spark straight to ground. Best way is to separate the circuits. Take one plug and wire, disconnect all the rest and check for a spark. Continue till you find the one that stops the rest. If none, suspect the coil. Double check all connections to the coil itself, assume nothing. Patience and good luck with your project. Oh yes, get a new capacitor for the points system and a new set of points gapped properly. Some call it a condenser, same thing.
Just noticed it is an 83, if electric spark, replace sending unit, and change information therefore.

I own an 1983 Porsche 928s 1st thing I did was check out fans Online. I found a 928 club. Signed up free of charge.
I propose you do the same. Any problem I have these people are more than happy to help. Our cars are old and not made so everyone repairs their own. With digital photographs and step by step information I have replaced
parts I could never have done usually because of effort Porsche puts into the vehicles.Electrical problems are listed . Ill ensure you haven't got a problem that's new to the 944. In fact attempt a 928 club because I believe they have the same wiring?

most probably it is your ignition module. it is located out by the coil but hard to see. small in size. it has two screws and a flat six pin or so connector. the module I think is typically grey. I have ran into this same problem some times. if you find it. tap it with a handle some times and attempt to start. some times they'll fire when you do that, then you know for sure that is the problem.
