I have a Mazda three Hatchback and it's an excellent car. The hatchback by default and with an upgrade on the sedan you may be able to get the better engine which I believe makes the car a blast to drive.

We've not had any real problems with ours. The only issue far with about 16 months and 25,000 miles was a check engine light where they replaced fuel sensor. I guess it was not a big deal at all but when you start the car it runs diagnostics on it self and one of the sensors haved problems.

We are looking at a second car and the idea of a second Mazda3 has come up.

I could greatly propose this car. I have a 2005 3i sedan, and my girlfriend has a 2006 3s five door. Both are great cars, but you may want to really decide what you are going for. If you are going for something that gets superb mileage, stick with a Honda. My 3i averages about 26 around town, and 32 on the highway with air and normal driving . My girl's 3s gets about 24 around town, and 30 on the highway, and she's a lead foot. If you are wanting something that gets good mileage but is a TRUE sports compact, purchase the 3. I chose the 3i because I knew I was not going to drive it for more than three years, and I will really be trading it for the Mazdaspeed three coming out this fall. it'll be a BEAST. there's also a host of performance parts available too, and as far as it being a "crappy built car," I am sure that person's dad most likely sells something sweet now, like Neons or Cobalts.

I'm also thinking of purchasing a Mazda3. I do not think you may be able to go wrong to get one. particularly after reading reviews from Motor Trend and Edmonds.com. it's most likely the best sport compact you may be able to purchase.even better than a civic.

yes there are great reviews from edmunds and motortrend but they only drive the car for some thousand miles. one person mentioned they may break down in 3yrs. I think all cars can last if they keep it up the way it should be oil changes, rotations, check ups, and I think they do gr8. I have the 1st year generation 04 Mazda 3s. and it was fun. Ford is takin over Mazda, so good luck finding a Japanese transmission or engine in the new ones. Mine is really Jap. now I am feeling a clicking sound in my car that is not do to pens, coins, or keys. My friends can hear it but the service techs can not. strange eh? I am nearing 55K mile mark with only 30months of ownership. so I am prob reaching the bad stuff before anybody else has. if you do get one, get Mazda's expanded warranty up to 75K or 100K if you plan on doing lots of driving. other than the clanking sound, which my warranty will cover once those techs can hear it, the Mazda three is such a fun sporty car. Go for the "s" or higher models
