It's most likely not that dangerous, but why take chances if you may be able to find another way to travel? Besides, lots of people do not like to pick up hitchhikers, so you may use up lots of time standing next to the road waiting.

Of course it is dangerous.. Why could you risk your life to a complete stranger? The driver may be a drunk, drug addict, rapist, robber, or murderer, you don’t have way of knowing what is behind his/her smiling countenance.
Nope, I am not going to risk my neck by thumbing a ride. Not to talk about the fact that it's illegal to either try to hitch or pick up hitchhikers in many regions .

Where I live people hitchhike every day to work to the store or where ever. The will line and down the street waiting for someone to pick them up. But I'm from the states and it's dangerous there I believe.

That depends on the car. If you hitch a ride with a motorcyclist there is no chance they'll point a gun at you because everyone will be able to see it as you two drive down the street, haha. And as a motorcyclist there is no problem picking up a hitchhiker because they can not really stab you or anything giving them a ride unless they want a good roll across the asphault. If you are in some black tinted van or car, then sucks to get a ride in that.

It's dangerous. It was dangerous 40 years ago when I started hitchhiking, it is gotten more dangerous since and I am a 6' man with martial arts, deadly and non deadly weapons, and hand to hand combat training.
I would not do it.
For personal transportation it is still possible to find a driveable car for under $500 some churches have "car ministry" programs, I myself have given away a couple of running cars through "Freecyclethe" . to get it insured is typically the hardest part.
You can still take a bus just about anywhere, they frequently have $99 round trip fare programs, good for anyplace in the US. it is easier in Europe with the "Eurailpass" or "Studentrailpass" systems.
There are lots of cheap, safer alternatives to hitchhiking.

In my opinion hitch hiking is dangerous in all countries, for both the person doing the hiking and the persons who pick up these strangers.
You can get killed, mugged, raped, car jacked.
In fact you're asking for it.
It is like a lottery in reverse.
When you purchase a lottery ticket, you have maybe one chance in a million of winning something.
When you play the hitch hiking lottery, the odds are more like Russian Roulette . you have maybe one chance in three that nothing bad will happen.
