is a 1987 Porsche 944 fast at all Theres no turbo if so tell me about it I have to know

Yes, it has lots of engine and little weight. it is plenty fast. Get it checked out by a Porsche mechanic if you're thinking of purchasing one. There are some crappy models out there.

They're fast, heavy but they drive light. Parts are costly for maintenence/repair. big aftermarket/enthusiast support for them.

Parts are costly, the 951s 944 turbos are much faster and wickedly moddable for not more in initial cost bout three or 4k in comparison to the seven eight for a nice turbo, however they handle well and have a decent bit of spunk.

Its not a drag car. don't expect it to be. It wasnt made as one, and an NA one wont be without big dollars.

i could not go for a 944 unless A: you have mechanical skill/knowhow of porsches which im presuming you don't, because you are asking about them and B: don't have a tight budget.

you must understand that back in 1987, 150 horses seemed like lots. Unfortunately now, almost 20 years afterward, your average family car makes lots more than that.

Sure, there's a hp to weight percentage to think about, also as a 50/50 weight balance front to rear that makes the car have unbelievable handling, but lets face it, nobody wants to purchase a Porsche and be outrun by a chick in a Scion.

Unfortunately, real performance parts for the 944 are not many and far between. there's no real way to squeeze decent power out of that engine without spending thousands of dollars. At that point, you may also use up another $2000 and purchase a 944 turbo also called the 951 or at least a 944S or S2. The "S" variants use a 16 valve engine . Those already come with the bigger brakes, the better suspension, and the better body kit. Most of them have Antilock Brakes and airbags, so believe it or not they are cheaper to insure too.

It is a good starter car for a new Porsche fan. As far as speed goes not that fast, and turbos weren't available in 1987. There are aftermarket turbo kits but they're $ costly, but the horse power get isn't worth the $$ spent. You may want to attempt a 1997 or 1998 Boxster, they're pretty fast and the handling is superb, corners like on rails.

A non turbo 944 isn't fast by 2006 standards, no. But it'll get out of own way. If you want a fast 944, you have to purchase the turbo.

I have an 83' which is quite nice. The biggest concern to me is changing the timing belt every 35 to 40 thousand miles, when it breaks it can because heavy damage to your valve and crack your crank. it's a car to love and take care. Parts may be ordered online at Vertex in florida they have generally treated me just.
The car isn't fast from a take off stand still at a light, but it has great acceleration, superb handling and it seems to kill. I know people are generally turning their head, a great increase to your ego.
High speed is 130mph. flooring it, maybe an 87' is better but I doubt it.

A porsche is still a PORSCHE regardless the years they're still fast cars. the 944 is still a fast car and will be able to out run many people. because of its design. but probalay I could purchase for the same priece a older 911, or a 968

I own both a 69 and 97. you have most probably never touched one. But you assert to be an expert. And here you tell him to get an early 911, but in your other answer, you say that older 911's are crappy? Make up your mind and stop leading people astray. In 69, the T had 110hp, the E had 120 and the S had 140 hp. These weren't "fast" cars. Porsche was more worried with handling, and won many races by reaching top speed and maintaining it caused by superior handling, than with speed and accelleration. Do your homework.

AS FOR THE ANSWER

The 87 944, presuming you're talking about a basic model, not the turbo, or the "S", had a hp ranking of 155 bhp. The turbo 1st appeared in 86, The "S" in 87 The base engine has been increased in 1987 over the last 147 hp which was constant from 1983 to 1986. This was done by rising the compression percentage of the engine to 10.2:1

Now the engine is a 2.6 L 2688cc 8cyl, and the car weighs in at just a hair under 3000 pounds. This is pretty heavy when in comparison to the 911s and given the engine size.

Although not a slow car, they're surely not the fastest thing around, either in their time, nor now. Like all engines Ferdinand intended but, they're quite "torquey".

So, for a fun, inexpensive sports car, they are a hoot. At home maintenance is pretty easy. But any big repairs may be expensive.

Any thoughts on to get an early 911? they're lots more fun to drive. A totally different experience with the engine in the rear.
