Is A Freon Leak Dangerous?

Postby Voziiiii » Sun Aug 26, 2007 8:17 am

I live in an second story apartment and I recentley had a problem with my A/C after they put more freon in it I could smell it in my home. And I have a two year old child, it's just me and my child, so I wondered if a freon leak like this may be hazardous to our health?

Refrigerant isn't poisinous. Breathing it'll not hurt you unless there's enough to displace the oxygen in the room. It could take lots more than is in a air conditioning system to displace th oxygen in your appartment.
Also most freons are odorless. So not sure what you're smelling.

Freon frē'on [key[trade name, any one of a special class of chemical compounds that were used as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, and solvents. These compounds are haloalkanes, i.e., halogen derivatives of saturated hydrocarbons see alkane . Every Freon holds at least some fluorine in its molecule, and most contain chlorine or bromine also. Freons are usually colorless, odorless, nontoxic, noncorrosive, nonflammable, and chemically unreactive. The most usually used is Freon 12, or dichlorodifluoromethane CCl2F2, which boils at 29.8°C and is a gas at common temperatures and pressures. it's prepared by the reaction of carbon tetrachloride with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a catalyst. There are some other Freons. Some of those containing bromine in their molecules were used in fire extinguishers. See also chlorofluorocarbons

Well people can sniff Freon to get high which can lead to brain damage so I could do something about it, particularly with a two year old around. And by sniff I mean really take it into their bodies, not just smelling it.

R 12, usually called freon, can become a poison gas after it was exposed to an open flame. Freon has not been used in cooling equipment for many years. I could think that your unit could have one of the new coolants in it. If it were me, I could call them back to redo the job they did not do right in the 1st place...

smelling a little freon in the air should be harmless unless you're directly inhaling it.

is the ac unit that's leaking inside your home?

if the smell lasts more than a day or two I could call the ac technician to come recover the freon so it wont continue to leak into your home.

I work on vehicle ac systems I smell it a lot. it's safe in small amounts..

if you continue to smell it have it recovered.

Freon itself is odorless and colorless. it'll smell like the oil that has been used in the a/c system because oil leaks with the freon. Under normal situation it isn't dangerous if a little is in the air.

THERE IS ONE BIG exemption..

If freon leaks into an open flame like a water heater or furnace in a garage it turns into a lethal chemical that can kill fast.

If your garage has any connection to your furnace or any pilot light or flame park your car outside till you're sure it's fixed.
