Refrigerant isn't poisinous. Breathing it'll not hurt you unless there's enough to displace the oxygen in the room. It could take lots more than is in a air conditioning system to displace th oxygen in your appartment.
Also most freons are odorless. So not sure what you're smelling.
Freon frē'on [key[trade name, any one of a special class of chemical compounds that were used as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, and solvents. These compounds are haloalkanes, i.e., halogen derivatives of saturated hydrocarbons see alkane . Every Freon holds at least some fluorine in its molecule, and most contain chlorine or bromine also. Freons are usually colorless, odorless, nontoxic, noncorrosive, nonflammable, and chemically unreactive. The most usually used is Freon 12, or dichlorodifluoromethane CCl2F2, which boils at 29.8°C and is a gas at common temperatures and pressures. it's prepared by the reaction of carbon tetrachloride with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a catalyst. There are some other Freons. Some of those containing bromine in their molecules were used in fire extinguishers. See also chlorofluorocarbons
