I have a 2002 Hyundai Excel with auto transmission. It has generally shifted pretty about but now in low gears it really kind of jumps when changing that is the way I describe it. Tonight I tried putting it in reverse, 1st it did not react at all, but then it really jerked back and surprised me. I am worried. Does anybody out there have experience with this in Hyundais or any knowledge that may help me know what the problem is and how serious?

make sure you have transmission liquid in it well enough liquid
I do not know TON about transmissions but I do know if the liquid is low they do not work good at all and if you keep it low it'll make them tear up.

some vehicles have magnets on the end of their transmission dipsticks to see if your transmission is going south.

if theirs metal shavings on it, somethings not working right.

I do not know if yours does or not, I dont' work on hyundai's.

if this is a manual it sounds like a bad clutch or slave cylinder

You may have a torque converter going bad, transmission control module needed re programed if equipped, wear in the differential presuming front wheel drive, or too fast an engine idling condition that feels real jerky at engagement. It needs checked out and possibly there can be a hidden warranty on it, check the NHTSA site for recognized recalls.

Try discussing this with a Hyundai dealer, if there's a fault that's a manufacturing defect then Hyundai may give up to five years old

I have to say this to the others answers you do not know jack
Ok Here is info you may be able to use not all the bull S&^%
First check the trans lever.
To do this start the car in park and on level ground. Warm up the car ten minets.
Next pull the stick and check the color.
It should be red, not pink, or brown
Next clean it off and reinsert it back into trans and check it.
If it's low add DEXTRON three till it reads full
Note: don't over fill.
If it's ok then smell the fluid
It shouldn't smell burnt or have a redish brown color.

If it all checks out, the it's likly the trans is going or gone.

But judging by what you have said the level is low
