i have an 88 Jeep Cherokee, when I go offroad and the bottom bums something is it tearing stuff up on the underside? or is whatever is hitting the ground 1st just like a bar that is there to protect the import stuff? when it hits the ground its typically the mid to back end of my car, and typically only when there are lots of people in it

On your Jeep you have three places that can get hurt BAD.

If you have skid plates then your better off then not haveing them, howeber this doesn't give you a free ticket to gam the gas and close your eyes, well that sounds kinda fun .

Under your Jeep you have three places that the Factory may or may not have put skids on,

1. Up front to protect your steering system, this plate will be in front of your front axle. This plate is for when your going over brush sticks and bush and rocks.

2. center, this is the move case, its made out of cast Alum. yea it may be broken easy enough, you may have a factory plate covering this unit, the move case sends power to the front axle making your jeep a 4x4. This plate protects you from rocks, and stuff but also keep you from wacking your case when you drive over a hill, you know as the front tires go over and the rear tires are comming up, you get a seesaw deal, that is what that plate is for.

3. Rear, this plate is for your gas tank, if any of the above I said happens and you don't have one you may be able to rip open or rip off your gas tank and if it don't catch fire you get to watch that $3.00 gas spill out.

Goto you local garage and ask them if you do, if you have front hooks on your Jeep then you have a good change of haveing skids.

I have an 02 restricted V8 and a 93 I6 and just sold a 98 5.9 360 LX.

I have also sold and put on many factory skids for Jeeps.

Its a Jeep thing we understand:

you most likely have skid plates under the car to protect the important stuff. but it is still better not to bottom out. some stuff like your exhaust and other things do not have guards and you could possibly do damage to something. but I would not stop having fun either. just attempt to minimize it. good luck

my brother in his 89 following my 99 just ended up having a log kick up in the rear destroying the rear brake line.

Pay to play.

If you do not have skid plates get them and it sounds like your prepared for at least a light lift kit and bigger tires. There are tons of aftermarket stuff for jeeps out there plus factory extras. attempt a salvage yard for cheap skid plates and jcwhitney.com for a cheap lift kit. About $100 and takes a day to install if you know your way around a wrench. With this lift kit you may be able to use stock wheels and up to 31" tires. If you want to go to the next step install a Lock rite or alike locker in the rear axle. These replace the spiders not the carrier so you may be able to do it in your driveway and they cost around $300.

well if it only happens when there are lots of people in it you may need new shocks in the back to start with, and jeeps are pretty tough but you pay to play so just be aware of where you're driving..
