Is there anything we can do to relieve rush hour traffic congestion?
I saw a question about rush hour traffic and it made me want to ask this. I mean why can not everyone just drive carefully and drive far back from the other drivers? If everyone did this it would not create such a madhouse on the roads and everyone can get someplace a little faster than two miles per hour and everyone is on everyone's bumper or if everyone just decides not to drive so close maybe we can all drive at least 40 mph but at far distances from the car in front of us and we can all get home at a regular time. What do all of you think?

yeah Sheldon Y I noticed this cuz everyone else is all driving on each other's bumpers but me driving really far back I have about a hundred car lengths and I can drive about 30 miles an hour in traffic on occasion and just simply back off the gas when it goes to stopping in front of me and still be driving about five miles an hour while everyone else is stopping and ramming into each other haha then I just go with whatever lane is moving then switch into that lane. Now I'm thinking there could be no traffic jams if everyone followed what I doed. People literally honk at me but really what I'm doing is causing people behind me to drive the same speed I'm at around 30 40 mph while all the people in front of me are driving like five miles per hour. Wow I think I found a way to cut down on traffic jams now if only I could get everyone else to drive like this wow I may be a hero haha..

Unfortunatly, we do not have public transportation here, but to relieve rush hour traffic, here is what I believe must be done:
1 Carpool. Granted, I know it is not feasible for everyone, but by carpooling as much as possible, it takes more cars off the road, and decreases fuel intake.
2 Drive a common speed. This is a big issue I see when I drive. Here in Michigan, there are two speed limitations on the freeway: 70 mph for cars, 55 or 60 based on the freeway for trucks. With trucks in the right two lanes, that puts slower traffic in those lanes, and the speed demons in the right lane trying to do 85 mph. Having everyone do 70 mph could smooth the flow of traffic.
3 change "Mixing Bowl's"
I'm not sure what they are called in different parts of the country, but this is where two or more freeways intersect at one point. The worst one here is for I 96, I 696, I 275, and the M five Connector. This brings a bulk of the rush hour traffic coming from Detroit on four lanes, to two lane exit ramps, and throws them all together at the same point. Staggering the entrance ramps could help a great deal, or widening the accepting freeway, then slowly narrowing it.
4 Just freakin' relax.
You're gonna get there just like everyone else. And, just like everyone else, you are stuck in a traffic jam. just relax, and you will get there, and most likely prevent an accident. The cliché businessman in a BMW, on the phone, jamming his car into every lane that is moving faster than the one he's in, without showing, and giving everyone the finger isnt' exactly helping things.
5 Know where you are going to be going.
This is the worst one that I can think of. I do not know how many times I will be to get off at an exit ramp and someone who is in the far left lane will cut over four lanes of traffic, and in front of me, and gives me the finger when I have to lay on my horn and my brakes. If you know your exit is coming up, get over. it is not that hard.

Does your city have fast transit like some big cities like NY, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, and D.C.??? But it is not just a lack of other modes of transportation, it is also the traffic accidents which because "bottlenecking", construction on the interstates, bad weather, etc. all which give to traffic problems also.

Sell your car, quit your job and stay out of the congestion. If one out of every seven drivers did this then traffic could be easier and more free flowing

you will never get everyone to agree on your ideas..the best way to achieve relieving rush hour traffic is carpooling and employers offering flex hours..

You know I generally wondered what it could be like if everyone either drove the speed bound or at least faster. But my answer is STOP DRIVING. ,

Afraid NOT. Thing will only get worse. In New York City, it's bumper to bumper at times, and at a crawl's rate.

I notice its typically before an accident, or if cops are on the side of the road. Nosey people looking at stuff slows downs the traffic. Then when you pass the accident, traffic speeds back to normal.

Well put simply, it looks a million other people do not see it the way you do, and just want to get to work. You can not blame them.
In my years of life, I have learned that things are only bad if you think they're. attempt relaxing, or listening to local music stations to tune out the traffic. Or, my favorite, every morning/evening throughout rush hour attempt counting your blessings and just be thankful you have a job. It really changes your viewpoint on life.
Trust me.

No Lane Hopping. People do not realize how much this slows down traffic. One lane starts moving so people jump over into it. Know why it started moving? Because the people ahead were to get out of that lane. If everyone stays in their lane, everyone will get to their destination sooner.

The only way to relieve rush hour traffic is to get people to drive less. if it be taking public transit, a bike, carpooling, telecommuting. We all have to make it a priority, which we have not. Too many people are content to sit in rush hour traffic and conduct their business on their phones while driving.
We have recently gone to one car. though my wife and I's schedules aren't the same, we make it work. on occasion one of us goes in early, while dropping the other one off. Othertimes, it may mean walking or bicycling in the rain. Yes, public transit may be slow too, but it beats sitting behind the wheel. Many people read or catch up on work while on the bus or train. more productive than driving your car.
