Is volvo s60 are easy to maintain? |
|
can you get parts that may be put into an s60 from an auto parts store? example: light bulbs for headlights, windsheild wipers, etc. can you change the oil by your self? do all maintenance services must be done at a volvo dealership with volvo real parts. only volvo holders answer this question unless you know a volvo owner or a former owner.

you may want to be able to find most parts on a stocked auto store, bulbs, wiper rubbers, etc. If you aren't using a Volvo original bulb, you may have to replace both sides at a time because slight wattage differences may not eliminate your "bulb warning" message on your dashboard.
I recommend you use a synthetic oil or synthetic blend particularly if your car is a turbo. Your S60 will need about 5.5 litres. you'll have to choose the correct oil viscosity as indicated by your outside temperature. The viscosity of Volvo's OEM oil is SAE 0W 30 or SAE 5W 30
Most dealers are equipped with VCT2000 or alike which interfaces the car's computer with VADIS or VIDA. It can pull codes to tell you exactly what is wrong with the car.sometimes before the fault occurs. it'll also match your car VIN to see in recalls or prerequisites for any software upgrades.
Here is a summary of the service program as indicated by VADIS but most dealers have like a checklist for like around every 6k miles or 10k kilometers generally halving the intervals listed below.
Every 12k
Auto gear box control check
Handbrake check + adjust
outside Lighting
Washer / wipers windshield & headlamp
engine check for leaks
gear box check for leaks
Engine oil / oil filter drain & replace
wheels / tyres check for wear n damage
Drive shaft check the play / rubber bellows
brake pads / disc minimum 0.12" front / 0.08" back
brake lines, filter, fuel filter check
brake liquid, power steering liquid, washer liquid, coolant
battery check
replace passenger compartment filter
reset Service Reminder Ignition position I, then press & hold odometer reset button, Ignition position II
Every 24k
replace brake fluid
Every 36k
Gas lines check for leak, damage, corrosion
replace spark plugs
air cleaner
Every 48k
top up gear box liquid I propose you replace liquid ATF Dexron III G
Every 96k or ten years
replace timing belt, belt tensioner, aux belt
replace fuel filter
Every 120k or ten years
SRS inspection
..and last but not least "Test Drive"

yes.. Had one. GREAT car. shouldn't have any issues maintaining or finding parts, but could propose bringing to dealership for the scheduled checkups.

You can certainly change the oil by yourself. There are quite some online communities for volvo holders and fans with howtos and advice for new holders. The only issue is that oil filters, etc are kind of a ache to reach. It isn't as easy as many cars, you need some specific although inexpensive tools from IPD to do the work.
If you need volvo like safety, I could recommend the Subaru Legacy instead. The turbo model is very fast, the awd system is superior to Volvo's system, and the car does better than the S60 in the IIHS frontal offshoot and NCAP side affect crash tests. Subarus are easy to work on, no specific tools, the oil filter is typically accessible without jacking up the car or removing splash guards, and parts are inexpensive. I could do the disk brakes on my old legacy in about an hour.

maintainance i.e. oil changes, liquid checks, tire pressure, filters will make you S60 go a long way.
If you ever get stuck with something wierd or easy check :
brickboard.combrickboard.com">brickboard.com volvo only bulletin board and unbelievable resources Parts, service, info reprints of service bulletins etc
Lots of S60 holders check usually to share experiences.
Enjoy

I'm a Volvo fanatic and was told by my Volvo mechanic that the newer Volvos 2001 and newer have lots of electical problems and if you end up with a dead battery, a Volvo dealership has to reprogram the computer systems of the car at a cost of about $800. I'd check into this 1st before commiting to an S60. Otherwise I have heard they're pretty good cars.

The five cylinder Volvo engine is reliable. Wipers, brake pads and things like that you may get anywhere. if you're planning to have your oil changed at a fast lube place you may want to pick up some number of Volvo oil filters at your Volvo dealership. Oil is oil, but the Volvo filter is a little better than you will find elsewhere. it's good to have your services done at the dealer although. When they service your car they plug it into the onboard diagnostic system where they scan 72 different systems. This is good for preventative maintenance.
