if your serious, whatever you do, get a six cyl with an auto if you plan on driving this everyday. I had a newer one with the four cyl five spd and it could barely get going fast enough to stay in the slow lane on the highway all I did was shift the damn thing. I also had an older CJ with the old straight six that I couldn't kill, the man I sold it to still drives it on weekends. As far as the lift goes you may be able to get some nice tires under a stock or 2" lift don't go big you will hate it.

It depends what you want the car for. My impression of the Jeep is that it's overpriced and not especially dependable. they are not liked among the rural people here who really need a truck those guys like small pickups with caps. My own choice for a work truck is a small van because the space is enclosed and safe.

If you are just using it to commute, purchase a compact passenger car: you will save on gas. Unless you are going over really treacherous roads e.g., not paved you do not need four wheel drive and its mileage and maintenance penalty, either. Are you sure that the lift kit is not just to look cool?

i could go with a cherokee most likely like a 1998 2000 I don't really know what they go for but you may be able to go to kbb.com and learn what one should retail for if you look up a used car value

a jeep wrangler 97 and newer could be best they have a largely modified suspension system and all kind of pasrts and upgrades that you may get a whole lot cheaper than on the older one like mine 91 [fun year if its a hardtop it should go for around nine thousand jeeps don't realy go up in value my jeep now with a hardtop new transmission new stereo syatem new seats will go for five six thousand. if you go around the same year as mine, don't go any lower 91s were the 1st year to have fuel injection, you must pay less and have pretty much the same jeep as the newer ones just different interior and a better suspension the new ones look crappy anyway . don't increase it too high im only raising mine two inches with a body kit im running 31x10.5 inch tires need the lift. and attempt to find a V6 4s don't have enough power and 8s are gas guzzlers. if you want to sound like and eight change the exhaust pipe. jeeps are the most fun vehicles ever. im 17 and I have pulled separately my jeep and put it back together easy to work on and so many groups you may be able to join to get advice myspace
I also get 18 miles to the galoln and I have a little four banger. for that just run some fuel injector carb cleaner through it. give it a tune up. fuel filter air filter, high performance spark plugs. then itll be great. get soem agresive tires new exhaust, check your year for recalls get em fixed the deck the thing out the way you want it mine looks awesome and im no where near finished...jeeps are chick magnets haha especialy topless jeeps

Good 1st car? realisticly no, they're costly and you're inexperienced driver if this is your 1st car, also all 4X4 are top heavy with sharp turn radius making them easier to flip. when I was 16 and I wanted one of those early 80s wranglers. parents forbade me from having it, well I quess I'm thankful thing is I ended up with a cheerokee much afterward and have had some number of jeeps since, they're one of the funest cars to drive, the 304 and the 4.0 are both great engines,as well as the 318, beware although all jeeps are pretty heavy fuel buyers the four bangers don't do that well I believe, those toyotas seem like a just agreement to the jeep though they're just as high priced,

My advice is do not get any lifted 4x4 for a 1st car. I know they're cool and fun I know, I own a new Rubicon but learn how to drive 1st. Get 100,000 miles under
your belt in a car then choose if you want to purchase a 4x4.
