I drive an 03 Jeep liberty. MPG tends to run mid twenties on highway and low 20s in the city. I love it, I have not had any issues with it at all and have taken it on some number of long road trips across the country to and from college. it is really easy to drive, it has the maneuverability of a car but the height of a van or truck which is good for someone who's shorter like me but also room for bigger drivers like my dad and brothers. You do feel the road more than in a car but for me I wanted something that drove a bit rougher. As far as the sound thing another poster mentioned, the Liberty has a bigger engine than it needs, they took the Liberty engine and started putting it into the great Cherokees because the Liberties are overpowered. I do not notice the sound, but I generally have the radio on or music playing.
The backseat does not have A/C vents if your wanting to have lots of passengers in their, just a warning, but if you aim the front two vents towards the back it stays cool. The folding seats do make great storage.
Just take it for a long test drive and see how you like it. On a side note, at least where I live, it is seen as a chick car. But I also live in South central texas where boys drive trucks and girls drive small SUVs. I have four five other friends who have one and they have not had any problems with theirs either. Also check buyer guide reports from that year of car, I think the 02 and 03 liberties were suggested from their class for safety ranking and handling.

My hubby has a 2005 Jeep Liberty. While this is a great car, gas mileage suck. 16 in city 20 hwy. We didn't know this when we bought it so we're kinda stuck with it now.

I owned and drove a 2002 Liberty restricted 4x4 V6 auto for two years and put 50 thousand miles on it.
Fuel mileage between 19 and 24 MPG on the highway.
Problems with car, none till 50 K miles when emissions sensors started failing.
Overall ranking of this car, average.

Stay away from all Jeep Liberty's. they're some of the simplest vehiecles to steal. I work as a mechanic and have heard many stories about how easy it's to break into them and break the ignition.

I do not know the mpg, but it is most likely around the mid 20's hiway and high teens to low 20's town. My sister has one a 2004? and she loves it. I can not stand the thing. The interior is kinda chintzy and cheap looking. The shifter is too far from the driver's seat, so you must bend your arm at an uncomfortable angle to drop it in gear. it is deafening. Not nice deafening either. It handles like a pig. it is no fun to look at. On the other hand, the rear seat folds down and it has lots of cargo space that way. it is reasonably comfy.
It's just a truck. If you need the four wheel choice and the space, it is most likely not a bad choice. If you really only need a car, there is lots nicer rides out there i.e. great Prix .
