Manual choke in an 80s subaru.what am I doing wrong?

I have an 85/86 subaru station wagon with a manual choke. This is how I start it: pull out choke, turn key, hit gas/pull choke out more. My husband generally starts it up now like this, but all I do is flood the engine.. WTF. What am I doing wrong??

Try using the choke all the way, then attempt starting the car without using the gas pedal.
