I am looking at a 2001 Mazda Protege with 178000 miles on it. The car seems it was well taken care of, drives well, clean, no damage. My hesitation is the mileage. How many miles can you put on a car before it's done for? I'm looking at this car for my teen daughter, I want a car that will last approx. three to five years with little up keep. Will Mazda',s go well over 200,000 before dying?

OK I have a 99 Protege with 211000 plus miles YES. they'll hold up well IF >,>,>, one replace the Timing Belt and WATERPUMP WHEN YOU purchase IT. two give it a complete tune up spark plugs and wires Radiator flush and T Tech Transmission Flush. Is it auto trans or five speed manual? Replace all belts and hoses. as well as the Heater hoses.Don',t forget the minor things . air filter and oil. I only use synthetic oil and MOTORCRAFT oil filter. Last if you may be able to Get a CAR FAX

Mazda',s have been recognized to go well over 300K if properly taken care of. that's high for an eight yr old car. But if it checks out it should be ok. But think about this as a parent, if the high mileage makes you feel uneasy about a cars dependability, then don',t get it. Last thing you want is Jr in the center of nowhere broke down with nobody to help. use up a bit more on a lower mileage car &, she can drive it well into her college years &, beyond.
