A friend of mine had a 92 Wrangler with a four cyl. and stick. I can not give you exact numbers but he generally said it did pretty good on gas. The thing was a real dog although.

Mileage for the four cylinder is not that much better than the 4.0 L six cylinder. you'll much happier with the 4.0.

I agree, the mileage on a 4.0 is not much worse, if any, and the improved engine is something you will appreciate afterward. despite, although, there is nothing that effects your gas mileage more than your driving behavior. particularly on a manual transmission. Give it less gas giving it 3/4 throttle will get you the same speed as giving it 1/4 throttle in many situations and shift earlier.

First of all.. Jeeps and MPG don't belong in the same subject. Wranglers, four cyl. Wranglers don't get good MPG. purchase a Honda. you'll hear all types of crap about what people say their MPG is, but it's just that.. crap grin .
Second issue is you don't want a four cyl. Wrangler if you like AC or if you want to avoid engine rebuilds. The 2.5L gets old and tired at approx. 125,000 miles give or take. The 4.0L not only has a much higher resell value, the engine is a hard to kill engine that will last 250,000 miles with TLC. My 1998 4.0L has over 150,000 miles and will be still going strong for another 100,000. This is normal for the 4.0L. You may hear stories of a 2.5L lasting 200,000 miles, but I'm telling you that's far from normal, or the experience of most Jeepers.
Got more questions? Contact me and I will attempt to assist you the best I can.

I own a 2000 TJ four cylinder with a manual transmission and I can tell you from experience the gas mileage SUCKS. Of course the fact that I have four and a half inches of lift, 33x12.50 MT's, custom built front and rear bumpers, and a winch do not help the MPG's any either. it is my daily driver also as a trail rig and it is a dog on the highway a sick dog also to to get really awful gas mileage. If you want good gas mileage, get a Honda or a Hundyai.
My suggestion could be to listen to Little Jeep and take his/her advice, get the 4.0 six and you will not only have a better car to drive on the highway, the engine, drive train, tranny and rear end will last a whole lot longer. If I'd recognized then what I know now I'd have gotten the six.
What really sucks is that now that I have my rig the way I want it, the only thing I can do is an engine exchange.
