My 1966 Cadillac is putting out white smoke directly from the engine. It comes and goes. Any answers?
When I 1st bought the car it smoked massively for the 1st 15 20 minutes. Then it calmed down. I noticed that tt smokes still, but only when it heats up to normal temp.

First off, I have a 1958 Cadillac Coupe De Ville if anybody thinks I'm going off generic knowledge here. What most probably is going on here is if the car was sitting for a bunch of years the cylinder walls will on occasion become glazed and the rings won't seat right. While the engine is running, take off the breather cap and pay attention to what is coming out of it. If you have lots of pressure coming out at you this is the case. To combat this problem, I poured a bit of bon ami soap straight down the carburetor. a bit will scuff the cylinders enough to make the rings seat properly. Most importantly drive the car around for some days and see if it assists.Another scenario I have had is if the car's engine hasn't been touched in lots of years the valve guide seals will get hard and fall separately which will because your smoke throughout start up problem. Take the valve cover off and look at it closely. If there are little black pieces in the valve area or you don't see any kind of "umbrella looking" part inside of the spring, then you have to replace the valve guide seals. The only other thing I can think of is there's a vacuum hose going to a modulator on the back of the transmission. on occasion these units rupture and will start sucking transmission liquid into the engine just like using a straw to take a drink of Coke. to check this, crawl underneath the car and pull this hose off. If it drools red liquid out of it this will because a constant smoke problem. If it does not then the modulator is good. Any more questions contact me and I'll walk you through anything you have a question on. Thanks, Morgan
