From one AE101 Corolla 1993 1997 owner to another:
It's not the keyhole that has a problem, it is the key. I experienced what you're going through, and it is exactly the same signs.
The key is somewhat warped, and that typically happens by leaving the key in the ignition keyhole for sometime like when playing the radio, the car is at rest and the engine turned off and attached to the key are some number of things that are heavier than the key itself, like keychains, car alarm modems, cool keychain attachments, etc.
One solution could be trying to find the sweet spot when turning on the ignition. It takes two or three tries, but in some way the engine gets started without problems. A little jiggling of the steering wheel while trying to begin the car also helps.
Another solution could be to get a copy of the spare key. I did that and when I have problems starting the engine using the prototype key, I use the copy key instead. Saves lots of wear and tear on your starter coil. =
Hope these ideas work for you. =
