My car's ignition will not turn?

Postby bigbird » Thu Sep 27, 2007 7:26 pm

It will start but for some reason if I stick the key in. it'll turn RIGHT before the on position. 1997 Toyota Corolla DX

Somethings wrong with the keyhole.

A what is most probably the problem?
B what is a most probably solution?
C Instead of just REPLACING it, what are other "more fun" alternatives while im doing this.

My car's ignition will not turn?

From one AE101 Corolla 1993 1997 owner to another:

It's not the keyhole that has a problem, it is the key. I experienced what you're going through, and it is exactly the same signs.
The key is somewhat warped, and that typically happens by leaving the key in the ignition keyhole for sometime like when playing the radio, the car is at rest and the engine turned off and attached to the key are some number of things that are heavier than the key itself, like keychains, car alarm modems, cool keychain attachments, etc.
One solution could be trying to find the sweet spot when turning on the ignition. It takes two or three tries, but in some way the engine gets started without problems. A little jiggling of the steering wheel while trying to begin the car also helps.
Another solution could be to get a copy of the spare key. I did that and when I have problems starting the engine using the prototype key, I use the copy key instead. Saves lots of wear and tear on your starter coil. =
Hope these ideas work for you. =

Could you clarify? If you can not move the key forward at all, attempt giggling the steering wheel. on occasion if the wheels are too of center the ignition locks. Happend to me in a GM van and a Saturn sedan before.

Well you could attempt rewiring the keyhole.
But you also risk frying the electrical system.

Wire your ignition to two switches like a race car. then you may be able to flip a switch and push a button to start it no key obliged. thieves will love you for it
