My vauxhall astra was sitting on drive for a while, the handbrake has finished how can I fix it?
the car is ten years old, but only done 65000 miles. The battery was dead, but now was re charged and the car starts no problem. It just will not move.

block the front wheels of the car, jack the back up take the wheels of and attempt banging with an hammer that should shock them loose.

First you have to find out what part seized. The lever. the cable or the brake pads.

Had a alike problem with my Astra. looks that the brake valve had seized. Take your wheel and cover off and relube it or replace it.

You can do what the others have said all what they say is right, but also attempt WD40 on the cable, if the brakes seized in maybe the dust covers around the pistons have gone and hence the name dust covers they could have let dust, dirt, and water in which in turn because rust, unless you're 100% in what you're doing its a garage job

I guess you're able to release the hand break leaver. If you can not, attempt pulling it up a bit while keeping the button pressed, then it should go down. If you still can not move the car, put it in to gear and softly softly force it to move by slowly rising power. be sure to move it in a direction where there aren't obstructions because it'll start moving with a jump. if you parked it forwards in to your drive, put it in reverse. To make this more successful, use a hose to put some water through the front wheel rims or alloys and wet the breaks because typically the front ones get pasted also. could be nice to hear your feedback.

Your emergency brakes may not work properly again unless you change the cable depends for how long it was sitting . I could softly move back and forth using the engine power drive it .
From sitting with the emergency brakes on, the pads/shoes got stuck to the rotors/drums.get them loose.
Good luck.

PS: If they're really stuck, follow Peter P's tell.

This sounds much like the brake shoes fused to the drum so take off the rear wheels one at a time and hit the wheel drum with a hide mallet whilst trying to rotate it this should work.

Stick it in reverse and drop the clutch while giving it some revs should break the bond between shoes and drums
