This is a common rail diesel and you must prime the system as the high pressure pump won't suck air.Only problem is there's no primer unit fitted to this engine. You can go and purchase one, its like a small rubber bulb with connections that fit into the fuel line and the filter head or remove the filter head and fill the filter canister with diesel, make sure its full to the top and all the air is purged then crank the engine till it starts. But be cautious if you wind the high pressure pump over for any length of time with no fuel in it you'll kill it as its machined to close tolerances eg microns and the fuel acts as its lubricant.Running out of diesel on a common rail is certainly a bad idea as swarf will come off the pump rotor and pump body and goose the injectors.

You have got to bleed the fuel system to get the air out. The bleed screw is typically on the side of the fuel distributor pump. Open the screw one or two turns, with the car out of gear turn the engine over the air will be expelled, close screw engine should start.

This is a messy job and the diesel will come out under pressure. Watch your eyes and wear old clothes. don't do it on the road there's a risk of contagion, the fuel on the road may be a danger to other motorists.

if you run out of diesel and put a gallon back into the car you'll get an air lock in the fuel pipes, and have to bleed the fuel system to take off the air lock and water which will have been drawn through the fuel pipes, fuel pump on car should have an air .water release system on I to enable the the system to be cleaned out. lesson never let the fuel system run low with a diesel car, I generally fill up the minute the warning low fuel light comes on.

I',m not a mechanic but I do know that when a diesel car runs out of fuel you must do something to the fuel pump. I'm not sure but think it can do damage to the car if you keep trying to start it. you must take it to a mechanic or preferably your Vauxhall dealership.

she will sucked all the dirt and sediment from the bottom of the tank and blocked the fuel filter, change it and it'll be ok.
