I'm looking at buying a car and I have a budget of about $35K. The performance is close, so is it pedigree or new?

I'd get the 350Z. it seems great and feels better to know that you just bought your brand new car.

the 996 is totally the way to go, hands down. PERIOD.

I sold my 99 996 a while back upgraded to an 03 GT2, and it was a great car.

The 350z may maybe keep up with a 996 greatly doubtful on a track, however everything else that it does just pales in comparison. The tightness of the gear box, steering, fit and finish, and the general "feel" of the porsche is so beyond the 350z its not humorous. Porsches frequently don't look that great on paper, but they get all of the non numerical things totally perfect. Seriously. Read some reviews of 996s, caymans and such. They frequently go against far faster and costly cars head to head, and nearly generally win just due to qualitative parts.

The porsche is an awesomely dependable car too. Mine only had two problems in my five years of ownership sticking sunroof, and a leaking coolant tank, a common problem .

I could greatly HIGHLY propose the 911. The 350z just isn't in the same league, despite of the brand name on it. The car just isn't as good in any part.

also: If you get the 911, make sure to join your local PCA, and go do one of their drivers ed events. you'll realize why porsche is porsche then, and why you made the right choice over a 350z.

also: look at EVOs and STis. My son has an 05 STi and its been a great car for the street and track. practical too. He gets a ton of compliments on it all the time and its stock, minus a racing harness . Hes loves the car. EVOs are wickedly nice also.

My recommendation is that if you can not pay for the insurance or maintenance on the 996, and they'll both be pretty high, then do not test drive one.

Because if you do, then you could never be happy driving a Nissan.

it depends on which 911 you purchase I mean the Turbo, Turbo S or a GT2 or a GT3 RS then the Nissan will never catch up but if you're talking about Carrera's then I doubt it.

all I'd say is a Porsche is a Porsche and a Nissan is generally Japanese.

Don't annoy looking at the 350Z, the Porsche 911 is a real sports car not a copy of one.

The 350z's top speed is 155mph. The 911 goes at least 170mph.
I could definately decide the Porsche.

996 or a poor man's 996 is the real question. there's a saying: if you must ask you can not pay for.
