Oil filter efficiency?

Postby V8 » Sun Aug 26, 2007 7:44 am

If an oil filter like wix claims around 50% usefulness at 20um and purolator premium plus claims 97.2% that could clearly mean the pruolator is the far better filter right?

But with out knowing if these refer to single pass or multipass, how can one know for sure what the better filter is? I have heard great things about wix, but at 50% efficiency at 20 um and purolators 97.2% at 20 um it seems they're awful filters.

Is 50% at 20um good or is it bad. Other filters like Fram TG say it stops 99%+ of all particles &gt,20um.

Whats the deal with oil filter efficiency?

Nothing but marketing.they are trying to persuade you to purchase their filter instead of the other guys. I have never in my 31 years of mechanicing seen an engine failure caused by an oil filter.

this is how one company typically rates another company's filter, the numbers they use are not generally correct although,i used fram for over 30 years now, and not once had any problems from them, while I see other people say they have, but company's say things like this to attempt and get you to purchase their product, its just marketing expertise there using, some filters are better than others although, like I said I used fram for 30 years, and no problems what so ever from any of them, good luck on it.

All three answers are correct. I have been to two of the five ail filter make plants and you see all types of names coming out the same door. it's a marketing ploy that's common to persuade you to purchase there product. It used to be illegal to false promote but if you word it perfect it's ok to fool the purchasing public.

you're entitlement to notice that any filter can say it's 100% economical but at what micron rating? I do know that Amsoil makes full flow oil filters with synthetic nano fiber media instead of cellulose or paper that are 98.7% economical @ 15 microns : amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=1463115&page=StoreFront/eaoamsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=1463115&page=StoreFront/eao">amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=14.
