you are not 100% correct jhrichjr77099. The Mk4 Golf didn't first appearance in the North American market till 2000 the Jetta had the 1999.5 model year, however on average, VW releases new car lines in Europe 18 months before they get sent to North America. The only exemption was the Beetle, depending on the Mk4 platform has been released in the states as a 1998 model. that is because it was intended by a California design team, not a German one.
a 1.4L Golf made in August 1996 is a 1997 model, and a MK3. The simplest way to tell is to look at the dash lights. If they light up green, you have a Mk3. VW changed to the red/blue lighting on the Mk4
