1991 Honda Accord Is burning oil quickly. Not leaking, but burning. What is a possible cause?
If it's the engine. Is it worth keeping the car and rebuilding the engine?

clearly it's the engine. just what in the engine may need more discussion. based on the condition of the outside and the interior, you could have to choose on the correct course of action. Putting in a lower mileage salvaged engine could most likely get you another 100,000 to 200,000 miles so it's a cheap alternative.

Let's see if we can narrow down the possibilities. If the engine starts easily like most Hondas, it means you still have good compression which could tend to rule out the piston rings. Leaking valves tend to decrease compression also and make for harder starts and poor performance. but, there are valve seals attached to each valve that keep oil in the cylinder head from to get down into the combustion chambers when the intake valves are open. alike seals are on the exhaust valves but leakage there ends up in the exhaust manifold where it's still hot enough to burn and produce smoke but shows little influence on performance.

Fixing piston rings is just an engine overhaul. If your car is approaching 300,000 like my '90 Prelude, fixing just the valve seals is cost prohibitory unless you may be able to do it yourself when it's probably something else is on it is way out. Honda's do not last forever without help.

Valve seals may be replaced without a big overhaul. have a mechanic do a compression check of each cylinder that will tell you lots. to get to the valve stems in a Honda with a four cylinder engine isn't most of a problem either. they'll supply a quote for replacing valve stem seals.

Get the Helm service manual for your Hondas. it is worth it is weight in gold. helminc.com

The rings between the cylinders and the pistons are worn or the valve seats are worn, either will let oil to get burnt with the petrol. in both cases your talking about stripping the engine and to get it reconditioned. lots of €€. if its an older car, replacingthe engine is a cheaper choice.

the rings are worn, its cheaper to purchase an engine than to rebuild. If you purchasing the engine look for a 93 with less miles same engine.

It may be a flawed censor, but more probably you need new piston rings honda'a tend to burn lots of oil when there rings go

More than probably it is the rings, overtime deposits clog up the oil control rings causing them to stick in the pistons. I would not recomend replaceing the engine because of this. Your best bet is to have a Honda technician have a look and confirm the problem. the engine can typically be re ringed in the car the engine is in just condition.
