Whats the best kind of subwoofer box to get?

Postby CARpenter » Thu Aug 23, 2007 6:32 pm

i have a 1997 pontiac trans am, and I am trying to get two 12" kicker subs, but I have to know what box I should get, I want one that hits really hard and is good quality. I know that trans ams half to have the special custom boxes and I have seen a lot of them for sale but I just do not what is the "best", I have heard fiber glass boxes are the best, what am I supposed to be looking for exactly, brand wise and specifics, what is the best, thank you for helping me.

If you're to get a custom box, typically branding does not make a difference. Just find something that fits into that tight spot. In a car like the Trans Am hatchback, it should be plenty deafening.
If it were up to me, I could go with a sealed box, since a ported box needs more volume than a sealed box which means it's bigger, AND heavier. You don't want to weigh down a sports car .

Make sure it's the correct size for your speakers.
you may be able to have the best speakers in the world put them in a crappy box or one tht is the wrong size and it'll sound like crap.

You have to know the volume your speaker needs to do at peak level, then you need a box that fits these dementions, and in the hatchback.

Good rule of thumb:

be sure the box is made of CDX at least 5/8"
and be sure it has all the seams glues and nailed.
Fiberglass boxes are best if you're using a non ported box, other wise it makes no difference.

The best box is the one suggested by the maker of the subs.

1 inch thick wood is what I use for all my boxes. Nice clean tones and deep. Also easier to seal. you'll most likely do best with a couple individual boxes to save on room. I could actualy set it up differently than most. If you have the power to make the speakers move I could install every one under your front seats. This could push the bass right up your spine. efficient.
