1998 Nissan Altima GXE: Engine Stalling While Stopped At Red Lights?
When I stop at red lights or just plain stopping while in "Drive," my engin will stall or begin to act humorous i.e: Odometer will go up and down quickly, like the engine is about to die . I heard about changing the knock sensor on other year models. But does this fix apply to me. thanks Much

1st things 1st. do not start replacing parts, because I just heard. because it gets costly after a while. 1st off do you have high mileage, over 120,000 miles. Does adjusting the throttle work ? Look for a vacuum leak, a common problem. Have your emissions checked, The odometer is the little thing in the speedometer that you zero out when you want to know the total miles driven for fuel mileage test or point to point miles reading. Are you sure you do not mean the tac., it reads RPM. Do yourself a favor and get your car to a good mechanic, not just to a Nissan dealer. And do not tell them what you think is wrong. Just tell then what the car is doing and let them learn what the problem is and they'll tell you what is responsible.

I was a good Nissan Datsun mechanic for many years. I had to retire, health. Yes I did have some mistakes, on occasion not by me. I did but stand behine my work. And if it has been needed, beyond the dealer warrenty. Ask around, good mechanics aren't that hard to find.

I had the same problem in my 92 Nissan sentra SER and it was my timing chain. I had it fixed at the Nissan Dealership in Sedalia,MO and a week afterward my engine blew. they put my timing chain on wrong do not go there . if it's your timing chain be sure they do it right.. keep your receipt and if it starts acting humorous after they fix it take it back asap...

It looks we all have had that problem with some cars. I had that happen to me, with my old Chrysler LeBaron. They could not find the problem, and some friend, suggested I change my gas station. I did, and the problem, has been solved.
Maybe the mixture was too rich or too poor, who knows, some anti knocking fuel mixture.
Try another brand of gas, see if that solves your problem. It may be many things, blocked filter, gas pump etc. attempt the easy fixes 1st, before shelling out good money to a dealer.
Good luck, I know what a ache stalling may be.

Have you had a tune up lately? as well, check the o2 sensor. This may make the RPM gauge go speratic. Good Luck.

I suspect you ment Tachometer.Look closely at battery ground at body battery and engine. Next there's a gray connectior on the passenger side of the intake manifold with eight important wires that get moisture in the connector clean with penetrant oil spray and blow out . No check engine light?
