My '88 Toyota convertible. one back window will not go up.?

Postby XXX » Tue Sep 25, 2007 8:02 am

There are two buttons between front seats on the console for the little back windows. One works..but the one for other window button does not make a sound. Could it be the motor part..or a fuse? Any ideas how to get it up? hopefully before a hurricane hits Thanks.

Your convertible is unlike any other Toyota on the market, because the rear window and top system is made by ASC in the US. ASC used to purchase Celicas and change them to convertibles, and they didn’t do a bad job. it's possible that the motor went bad, but I see more of the switches fail than the motors. That motor is still available from Toyota, but they're unbelievably costly. Having never checked, I don’t know if they could be available from anybody else. It isn't a job you want to tackle yourself. The system is in four parts, unlike the common two that you see on most cars: motor, regulator, plate and guide plate. The regulator is unlike any other on other Toyotas and isn't interchangeable. I just have repaired one of them on a 95, and it's alike. If in fact it's like the 95, you have to take off at least the bottom part of the seat and the inner quarter trim to access the motor wires. To really get to the motor is more complex. to check the switch, after removing the seat and quarter trim, reverse the wires to the motor and push the switch DOWN. If the window goes up usually, the switch is bad. that's also available, and not terribly costly. Good luck and God Bless.

If you aren't hearing anything, most probably a motor since it's an 88. If you do hear something but it will not move it may have slipped its track. I don't mean the window. I mean the wire that the motors pulls down on to increase the window.
If you want to fix it yourself. go to AutoZone or something like it and get the part. Remove the door panel that it's behind. Unplug the motor. Unbolt the motor. screw in the new one, plug it in and put the door panel back on. You may want someone to hold the window up so you may be able to get your hands on the motor. If you do not have anybody to assist you then use channel tape to hold it in place. Good Luck.

I agree with the last answer. but, I'd like to add that four out of five times the problem is just a wire that has worn out over time near the window. When that happens, it'll give you the same signs no motor running and no answer from the switch. It may be as simple as taking off the panel and reconnecting the wires with electrician's tape. Good luck.
