What are your opinions on the Toyota Prius?

If you need a performance car, the Prius isn't for you.

If you need a daily driver car that's low maintenance, gets great gas mileage and has all kinds of electronic gadgets drive by wire, touch screen controls, Smartkey, etc., the Prius is for you.

Not only should you think about the gasoline prices, you may want to also think about the savings in maintenance costs:

The Prius brake pads and rotors will last 100,000+ miles caused by its use of regenerative braking. My other car is a Range Rover, and I had just changed all four sets of its brake pads for $400, which lasted only 30,000 miles. In another 30,000 miles I'll have to use up another $900 on the Rover for new pads also as rotors.

Since the Prius' gasoline engine isn't in use all the time, you will not have to change the motor oil in the Prius every 3,000 miles like a normal car The suggested change is at 5,000 miles when using dino oil in the Prius. it is also virtually unheard of for the Prius to fail a state emissions inspection.

The transmission in the Prius has no clutch and has no fixed gear percentage the planetary gear power split device differs the power delivered to the wheels without having to shift gears like a regular transmission . Its simplicity makes it robust and low maintenance.

If you need a dependable, fuel economical daily commute car, the Prius is a great choice.

It has the slowest steering of any modern car I have driven. hurts the fun to drive factor. The electric motor makes the car feel like it has lots more oomph than it really does that is a good thing For the money you use up on a prius, you could really get a corolla, echo, sentra, civic, or something alike and use the money you saved to pay for gas. It takes a long time for a prius' fuel savings to be worth the extra cost of the car. The new civic on the other hand has some of the fastest steering of any modern car I have driven and lists 30 city 40fwy mpg.

Anyone who really owns one will tell you that it's a great car. Unfortunately many people who have never really touched the car let alone driven one will tell you that it's junk and that the traction battery will die after x number of miles. I'll be up front in that I do not own a Prius and never owned one but I have driven one and loved it. My only complaint is that it does not have power seats as an choice but I'm 6' 2" tall and fit into the driver's seat quite comfortably anyway. I propose you at least test drive one and if you may be able to rent one and drive it for a week to see if it's right for you or not. Toyota has a program called TRAC where you may be able to on occasion rent a car directly from the dealer. To add to the low maintenance list the current Prius has no starter, no alternator, no power steering pump, and no spark plug wires so there there's little to wear out. The current model does still have a serpentine belt but since the only thing it drives is the water pump for the engine it also typically lasts longer than the belts on other cars. As far as worth the money goes I could say yes it's as I do not know of any other cars that start at somewhat over $20k U.S. that have a touch screen in the dash. Oh and now that the EPA MPG estimates for all cars have been changed for 2008 which knocked the Prius numbers down from 60/51 to 48/45 it should be easier for you to surpass them if you keep your tires properly inflated to someplace between the suggested minimum numbers of 35 front 33 rear and whatever the max cold pressure is on the sidewall and if you be sure that your engine oil is between add and full but never over full.

It is the most groundbreaking car ever made for production. For 23000 you get a car that gets 48 on highway and 52 in city. Toyota owns entitlement to a part that makes it the ONLY true hybrid. You don't have to charge, can run on either gas or electric though not suggested. Top speed is 120 and zero 60 is 7.2. there's no sound, is comfy for five people, and to get more stylish. Instruments are certainly upgrades from norm. Available with Nav, bluetooth, and many other alternatives like leather. Choice between Camry and Prius at same price I could get Prius.

It's totally worth the money. In fact, a Prius will make up for the initial cost in fuel savings in about five years. if you get a five year loan to pay for it, your higher monthly payment will be made up for in fuel savings, and after five years you will be saving money.

Other than that it is just a great car. I love driving the Prius, it is spacious and comfy, handles well, can speed up well if you need it too, has low maintenance, and best of all, it is the greenest car on the planet:

If mpgs is all your after then take it, if sporty fun your after then leave it alone. they're selling pretty fast but I personally hate the looks and it lacks big performance.

What are your opinions on the Toyota Prius?

I tried to look for a worse car than the Prius, but I couldn't find one. I hate them badly. I laugh at the people who drive them. If you want economy, then get a diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets 60mpg, plus you get performance. I personally think about the drivers of Prius to be suicidal.

Uh, hate to burst your bubble, but the VW Passat Diesel doesn't get anything close to 60mpg. Using the modified EPA figures, the 2005 no Diesel Passat newer than 2005 available in the US gets a depressing 23 city, 34 highway, joint 27. Sixty MPG?.? haha.

The 2005 Prius may also look at the same model year as the newest available Passat gets 48 city, 45 highway, 46 joint. In other words, city mileage is more than double the Passat. Highway & joint are almost 50% better than the Passat.

If performance is what you want, then the Prius is not the car you may want to be looking at, but the Prius is surely good enough for real world driving. If ten seconds zero to 60MPH is not fast enough for you, then you belong on a race track anyway. Go test drive one and see for yourself.
