1st things 1st. When you say "it leaks," how much? A little? A lot?
If you have antifreeze in your car and it leaks, what color is it? This is not to make you feel dumb. If your air conditioning is running, it drips clear water. If it is antifreeze, it is either green or orange.
If you are having to fill it weekly, it sounds like you have a leak. Yes, your car could overheat, but based on what is leaking, may be a hose, which isn't too costly to fix, and pretty easy too. it may not be too bad.
If you are not mechanically inclined, I'd take it to a mechanic you trust. If you're, just look underneath and see if you may be able to find a leak. Check your hoses and hose clamps 1st. If it is making some strange noises when it runs, it may be a water pump. there is a hole in the front called a weep hole that will be dripping water if the pump is going bad. If that's the source, you need a water pump.
If you see no leaks, but you are still losing lots of water, it may be a heater core inside your car will smell like antifreeze, your floorboard may be wet, and it'll appear like your defroster will be shooting steam .
So, as you see, there may be some different problems.
