I own a shop, and two things come to mind. One: The fuel gage assembly inside the tank is loosing its ground, or the register is shorting out in some way. You may have to have the tank dropped down, and the unit replaced soon. Two: The catalytic converter can be plugged up, and needs replaced. This could account for the heat thing, but I do not think it has anything to do with the fuel gage reading wacky. Just to be on the safe side, have the codes pulled from the computer to be sure the O two sensor is working properly, and to see if anything else is there. A poor mixture situation could make the catalytic converter heat up too.
Glad to help, Good Luck.
