Reason NOT to buy an older Lexus?

Postby ProgrammerX » Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:12 am

I',ve been looking for a good used car. I found a Lexus GS400. The bad news is that its eleven years old 1998 and it has 134,000 miles on it.

The good news is that it was well taken care of. All regular maintenance done punctually and at the dealership. The owner has service records going back to 5,000 miles to prove it. The interior and outside look great. The owner just put $2000 into the car as preventative maintenance New suspension, radiator, tires, etc . The asking price is $8000.

I have to get 200k miles out of this car before it could need any costly repairs. it looks to be in great form, but I',ve never owned a Lexus. Does anybody know anything about Lexus that could keep you from thinking this is a good used car to buy?

You should also think about that such a car can be costly to insure. Check your insurance rates before purchasing one, as an example here carquotes.sinfreethe

Lexus is a high quality car but. it',s old and 134k is lots of wear and tear. It',s only a matter of time before the transmission, wheel bearings, brake calipers, or engine seals begin to fail. That',s most likely why it',s for sale. I think $8,000. is too much money for this car if it seems like new. I could purchase a car like that if it was less money and I know I could have to use up money on repairs sometimes.

Everything about that car is luxury, so parts are costly. One thing going for you is its a lexus, made by toyota, which is greatly reliable and dependable. Just whne the parts start to break down, youll pay good for OEM parts. other than paying for Super gas, Go for it.

One simple reasonthe maintenance cost, fix cost is about triple for what it's on other automobiles. Many mechanics won't work on Lexus',s.

As an example, a new water pump on my 2000 Lexus was 738.00 and on my wife',s Buick Le Sabre it was 218.00

dear friend lexus/toyota has had an exelent repute since back in the 1960 when toyota 1st came out. they're good cars I strongly recommend it I worked on lexes since they came out in fact I'm a lexus master tech. I can't advice you on the price although. but you may be able to find that out on bluebook.com. the only other thing that I'll recomment is to learn if the car is register for any accidents at the dmv.

also do to been an older car you may want to expect some problem to come up at some point. if you ever need a mechanic on the side call me 310 904 4350 martin

if it was taken care of you may want to dont have big issues. also the gs 400 is a good engine. it',s eight cyl. you'll never have to replace it as long as you get reg oil changes every 30005000 miles. if you wanted to stretch it you could go up to 8,000. you may be able to get 250300 before I could start to worry. if you need parts don',t go to dealer. dealers will rip you off all the time. a local shop stocks same parts for toyota/lexus and will charge you half of what dealer could charge. timing belt and water pump toyota wanted 550 for parts and labor. got it done at local shop toyota parts for 325. timing belt and water pump will be good for another 7085,000 miles. parts aren't costly it',s just dealers are rip offs. think of what dealer has to pay. they pay for parts, then have to pay mechanics, etc. they have a big overhead., then after that they have to make a profit your better going to a local shop where there's a owner and a couple mechanics if you need work done which you shouldn',t till after 250,000 miles.
