What are other axle choices for a 90 jeep YJ.?

Postby bigbird » Sat Sep 01, 2007 11:21 pm

My friend has a 90 YJ and I just want to know what other models and years could make a respectable donor. I could rather exchange the complete axle than to mess with the diff. If you could also supply a link to any axle code charts that decode gear ratios that woiuld also be useful. Thanks in advance.

Only 1987 thur 1995 YJ axles will screw up, The question is what your friend wants to do with Jeep, 1. keep is stock as a daily driver, 2. Lift kit over sized rubber, weekend wheeler, or 3. Full time kick a wheeler. Crownautomotive.com list what gear ratios and what axle came in stock YJ.

The Cherokee axle of those years is CLOSE, but not exact. Yes, I know that both are Dana 35,,,BUT in Canada they offered the Dana 44 as an choice in those years on the Cherokee. Sorry, but beyond this you're moving brackets. The most liked change that's out there's the Ford 8.8, but you must move the brackets. Is around 5/8" narrower, but MUCH stronger. Go to MallCrawling.com, and Jeepsunlimited or pirate4x4 for details. Unless you increase the power or tire size, the Dana 35 is ok,,but it'll fail on big tires and or a stroker..Been there, done that.DON'T.
Good Luck

You can pull a Dana 44 or Chrysler 8.25 out of a junked Cherokee or great Cherokee that has disc breaks and put it right on. Years are particular so be sure your splines and gear ratios match.

Just find an Explorer 8.8 and go from there. they are only somewhat narrower, but have the same lug pattern and typically have disc brakes with them. you may be able to find the brackets/perches nearly anyplace in a kit. do not forget to regear your front axle to go with the percentage in the rear.

You can get the install kit here
mountainoffroad.com/mountainoffroad.com/">mountainoffroad.com/.
click the catalog button then go to axle mounting hardware and brake lines. there's an 8.8 install kit down the page a little.

Here is a great write up to get you started:
