Postby TonyNo » Sun Sep 02, 2007 6:55 am

1984 jeep wagoneer will not start runned two weeks ago now it turns over good and sometime will sputter like it wants to start but it just won't. It has spark, it has gas to the carb and the fuel pump looks to be working. I changed the module, rotor, cap, wires, plugs, I don’t have more ideas can someone help me out a little?

It may be your timing is so out of whack that it wont run. Did you move the distributor when you changed the cap? As long as the battery is charged it could not be the alternator. You could attempt holding your hands over the carb when cranking be cautious and be sure its sucking air in instead of blowing air out.

could be the fuel line is plugged or your starter is bad or the alternator. it is an 84 just tired.

If the jeep runned previous to installing the wires, you messed up the firing order on the distributer cap, autozone.com has the firing orders online, you may be able to print it out, if all else fails put back everything the way it was, and go slower next time.

It sounds like you have pretty much checked everything there's to check.
But have you tried to put so dry gas into the fuel tank, and also attempt checking your fuel filter, It may be plugged.
Hope this will assist you.

My 1st guess could be the fuel filter or carb is plugged. Fuel filters will in some way plug themselves after sitting for a while. If that does not do it, get a carb rebuild kit, clean all the passages and bowls out good. If you find lots of gunk in the bowls, that's most likely the trouble. If that does not work, your timing chain may slipped. If you have gas and spark, usually an engine will start. But if the timing chain is off, the valves are not opening at the right time. it'll still sputter like it wants to run, but can not. Take the valve cover off so you may be able to see the valves for #1 cylinder. Rotate the engine to top dead center. The valve rockers should be a little loose now and the rotor pointing to the #1 spark plug wire, if not rotate another turn to TDC. If things do not seem to be lining up, your chain may skipped a tooth or two. Kind of a big job to replace it since it stretched, however nothing real big. good luck.

It takes, fuel, spark, oxygen and compression for the engine to run.

Do this: attempt to begin the engine. If it does not start. stop and pull a couple of plugs out.
Are they wet? Its to get gas. may be flooded.
Are they dry? Its not to get gas. learn why.

Remove one of the spark plug wires, using a screw driver, stick the blade into the spark plug boot and hold the shaft close to some part of the engine. Have someone crank the engine over. Did you see a spark? you may want to. If not something is wrong back toward the coil or module.

Have you checked the coil? Does it have power to it? Do a ohm check on the coil's main winding. No continuity, main winding is burned out.

Say you changed most every thing as well as the wires. Are you SURE you got the wires back in correctly?

Have you checked the timing? may have slipped out of time because of a broken timing belt or chain.

How about the compression? Is it ok?

Good luck. Pops

Check the timing. With the era of the Jeep the timing chain
might be stretched and making the motor out of time with the cam shaft.
