Pros and cons of a jeep wrangler?

Postby Lilride » Sun Sep 02, 2007 8:19 am

1st off, with no intention of being offensive. If you must weigh the pro's and cons of OWNING or buying a Jeep Wrangler, chances are you may want to go with the next car on your list. The reason I say this is that being Jeep owner isn't something that one can "justify rationally." Let me offer an odd, still relevant comparison. let us say you want to purchase a dog, and you think you want to purchase a Labrador Retriever because you see people playing with their Labs in the park and it seems like fun and it's I have two of them oddly enough for the same reason I drive a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport. There are good parts and bad parts to owning labs. they're versatile dogs, fun to play with and favor the water and mud as opposed to your common pomeranian, miniature daschund, shi tzu or any other small friend lap dog accord, maxima, cavalier, or miata. that's the fun part. Where it gets trying is the maintenance on the labs. they're prone to some number of illnesses like hip dysplasia, heartworm, eating things they shouldn't like nails, socks, cupboards, doors, trees, shoes and may be costly to preserve if you don't get them looked at by the vet on a regular base, or learn to take care of them yourself through intensive study and patience. Some of the dogs end up abused, mis treated, or in bad form caused by neglect and malfeasance. At which point you have a person that owned a Lab before and hates the breed and talks bad about it, just because they weren't the right kind of owner, didn't want to train and maintain the animal for what they're a part of your family. it's Much the same with a Jeep. There are good and bad parts of owning a Jeep Wrangler. I'll start with the bad. they're small vehicles, get bad gas mileage, the a/c condenser has a tendency to leak into the passenger floorboard, creating a musty, moldy smell in the car particularly in the Texas summertime heat and humidity and don't handle well at high speeds. They at times will have electrical issues quirks, the radio may be stolen easily, the top cut if you have a soft top the tires are costly and they're very noisy on the highway, although you can't go over 70mph for long periods of time without the engine to get too hot, they're costly to preserve There are a BUNCH of other negative parts to owning a jeep.
NOW
There are a bunch of positive facets to owning a JEEP also. you may be able to go virtually anywhere, the top and the doors are easily removed, they're fun to work on and change and they're small, uneasy, noisy, stinky enough to where your friends could rather drive to the restaurant, movie, party, whatever and you save your gas money. Not to talk about, Nobody is going to ask you to borrow your Jeep to move their house or apartment or whatever.
A JEEP is a "special" car for a "special" kind of person. Not essentially the "short bus" person, though on occasion I feel like I should be riding the short bus for owning one.
If you're a JEEP PERSON, you'll know it. You don't want to purchase one, hate it, abuse it, get rid of it and talk bad about all of the problems you experienced with it and make people ask questions on answers as to if or not they should purchase a Jeep.
If you believe you're a Jeep person Go for it. I sold mine to a person that isn't a Jeep person. Then I bought it back real cheap. if I could pay for a range rover, hummer, lambo, ferrari or whatever this could be choice of vehicles.
I am a Jeep person, which doesn't make me better than any other person in the world. I just like to get dirty and drive a stinky, fuel hog, rough riding, noisy, high maintenance car that can get me any my dogs back into the sticks where we can get totally filthy and drive back home in a car that smells like wet dog, sewage, sweat and mildew.

Pros and cons of a jeep wrangler?

Postby panikeeer » Sun Sep 02, 2007 8:20 am

Pros: 1. Great off road vehicles can go just about anywhere and do just about anything when put to the test, 2. Fun to drive, 3. Easy car to change i.e. lift kit, etc., 4. Parts and accessories are abundant and easy to find, 5. Easy car to fix or to replace parts, 6. Holds its value, 7. dependable car, etc. etc.

Cons: 1. Soft tops are deafening when traveling, 2. A bit bumpy but that is the delight of driving a Jeep, 3. High risk of roll over if not driven properly. can not think of any other cons .

I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sahara that I have changed with a coil spring suspension lift and added 32x11.50x15 mud terrain tires and I haven't have any problems with the Jeep since modifying it. I do lots of off roading and have not had a problem there either. No problems with the a/c air conditioner like the man above me stated, works as good as new and no leaks. I greatly recommend you taking a mechanic you know and trust with you when looking at used vehicles.

If you're in search of a used or new Jeep Wrangler, I could propose that you do a little research on them before buying one. as well, be sure that you check for liquid leaks, both under the car and under the hood, be sure the 4wd works and that the car is in good condition with no body rust or damage.

Hope this helps.
