My son is looking at a 1999 Lexus something which is a six cylinder. I told him that I don't think that the car runs on regular gas, it must use premium. Am I right? it's a factor in which he didn't think about.

I think you're correct because I see my father fill up his Lexus up with premium gas. He says you are damage the engine if you pump it with regular gas, but I do not if its true. But if you are driving a Lexus it could be embarrassing to fill it up with regular gas.

Most high end Japanese luxury sedans use high compression engines which require premium fuel. Most Lexuses Lexii? I have seen run premium.

Check out fueleconomy.gov for particular car information, as well as obliged octane ranking.

Not essentially, verify with the dealer who has the car for sale.

The Lexus is made by Toyota, yes by Toyota, and I have a six cylinder Solara Convertible Toyota and use regular gas.recommended by the dealer.

I think it is a great car..just check if it is a certified used car..Dealers use that term certified for their best used cars.

1999 Lexus six cylinder is a 3.0 L Toyota engine. The 3.0 L engine like most mass production gas engines are intended to run on regular, 89 octane fuel. Premium gas isn't needed for this model.

The electronics in the Lexus engine will automatically change for the octane level of the fuel. To get the maximum performance possible, premium fuel usually 91 octane or above is suggested . Using lower octane, rated 87 or 89, won't harm the engine, but will result in somewhat lower maximum performance and somewhat lower fuel economy, as lower octane gasoline doesn't burn as proficiently.

I think you're either looking a the Lexus ES300 or GS300

If it's the ES300, it uses the same engine as the 1999 Toyota Camry V6. They both have the same specifications. 3.0 L with around 190 hp. That engine will run on 87 octane.

If your looking at the GS300, I believe 91 is suggested but it isn't obliged. I'd ask your local Lexus dealer.

Good Luck.

I believe you need premium, but if you purchase 1000 gallons a year and it costs you 20 cents a gallon more, that is only $200 for the whole year

This is a great questions. Today all of Lexus vehicles are rated for premium fuel 91 or higher. But back in 1999 there were three vehicles that were rated for regular fuel. The ES 300, RX 300 and the LX 470 were rated for regular fuel.

Be sure to look at your answers from trowbridgenyc, John S, and Jay. They all had great insight for this answer. And also check out the site suggested by quick4_6:

fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymanu.htmfueleconomy.gov/feg/bymanu.htm">fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymanu.ht.

Do a search to see the fuel info for all 1999 Lexus vehicles.

Lexus is a great car and was award #1 for dependability in the world eleven years running be J.D. Power and Assoc.

regular is 87, not 89, as someone said. it is most likely the same six cylinder engine found in camrys and other toyota v6 vehicles. i'd use regular for it.

Yes, you're right. I have an ES 300 '98 and I have tried using lesser octane gas and on occasion could have a hard time starting the car or the car could shut off while I am driving. Now, I only use premium gasoline. you have to use premium if you don't want to wreck your car.

It's a myth that high end cars require high octane gasoline. I have been driving my 1999 Lexas RX 300 for six years and I never used anything higher than 87. Still runs great & never had any problems.
