I am a long time Mazda rotating owner RX2, RX3, RX4, REPU, and three RX7s of different years. now own an 89 RX7 GTUs. and have to agree with the other poster. If the car is abused and needs work it'll be hard to find a mechanic and a decent price for repairs.
If you do your maintenance and keep everything in good form, they're great cars. Fast, good on gas if you may be able to keep your foot out of the "show off" position and dependable. I wouldn',t use one for constant city "go to church and the store', granny driving, but for highway cruising and performance fun they're great.
They have been called the poor man',s Ferrari by some of the car mags and like Ferrari, require constant maintenance and a different driving technique to keep them running good. BTW: 84',s used both the 12a 1200 cc and the 13b 1300 cc engines. The 12a',s use harder to find engines and engine parts. The 13b is the better choice for power and parts. The importers don',t typically have 12a engines available and the 13b has more base power and more mods available with just the same fuel mileage. Both engines plug into the same chassis with no problems, but the electronics are different and may be a ache to adapt. Some came with an auto tranny, which takes lots away from the fun of driving a seven on a windy road.
Parts are readily available, but may be costly. Of course to get a low mileage Japanese engine imported from Japan for less than $3000 with tranny and all computers is the same as you',d use up for one to fit a Toyota, Honda, etc. and out run, out corner any of them.
