When the ML came out in late 1997, they said it may got 10,000 miles on regular oil and their self monitoring system had that set as the default. It most likely may have gone that distance but then the mechanics got involved.
Instead of putting the car on a hoist and removing the drain plug at the bottom of the car and draining out the oil and sludge, they could stick a little pipe down the oil check tube and suck out the oil. That way they didn't need a hoist, they didn't have to get under the car and they could use trained monkeys to change the oil.
Of course, the sludge got left behind and sooner or later the engines were to get ruined. So Mercedes got sued and loss a class action lawsuit. They had to give out some free oil changes to each owner. But the lawyers, of course, made millions.
Also, rather than admitting their mechanics were the because of the problem, rather than admitting their cars couldn't go 10,000 miles between oil changes, they blamed it on the oil and switched to synthetic oil.
I found a mechanic who is Mercedes qualified who doesn't work for the Mercedes dealership. I use a good quality oil and change it every 3000 miles with the filter. HE drains the oil from the bottom of the car and gets all the sludge out. While he's under there, he looks for problems in other regions, something the Mercedes mechanics weren't doing.
Remember, they were and still can be, suckers.
If you get your car serviced at the Mercedes dealerships, check to see how they're changing their oil. If they're still suckers, you may want to find a different place for routine service.

Just take the car to a dealer. That solves most of your problems. You can also read your manual.
