The maker of the car posts the suggested tire pressure with a sticker on a door jamb, typically the drivers side door jamb. The pressure given isn't essentially the maximum pressure capacity of the tire. The pressure given in the door jamb gives what the engineers determined to be the best ride/performance for what the car was intended for.
Offroad able vehicles will usually have a lower pressure listing. as an example, the Isuzu Amigo has a door jamb pressure listing of 28 psig but the Yokohama Geolander tires we put on it show a maximum pressure ranking of 44 psig. that is a pretty difference.
Since this car was driven mainly on freeways, we opted for the 44 psig particular by Yokohama to decrease the roll resistance and improve the fuel economy.
So. in a nutshell, with gas prices the way they're, look carefully at the tire sidewall and you may want to find a maximum pressure ranking. With the tires cold, I could pressurize them to that value.
