Rock Chips On My Truck? |
|
I live in a area were we have lots of dump trucks and when I am driving down the highway, rocks are generally hitting my truck. For some reason, my truck looks to be the only car that gets rocks chips. I just got my truck not a month ago and there's hundreds of scratches. My boyfriend has a old Ford Tauras that has not gotton one scratch. My mom has a Honda CRV, same thing, and his mom a Ford Explorere. Does Dodge have crappy paint jobs or something? I tried using the scratch filler, that matches my truck and it did worse then good because I accidently smudged it and now there is a big paint smudge mark on my truck, so I am upset. 1st is there anyway of to get this off? Second, is there anything I can put on the paint, like a wax to prevent more chips? I am just upset about it, and any advice could be great. thanks

1. do not rear trucks, dump trucks, semi's, etc. stay back at least 50 yrds. this will decrease chips.
2. wax, wax, wax, wax, and wax some more the complete nose of your truck/car. the more wax, the more "bounce" the rocks will have. paint without wax is like a rock hitting a window, shatters, in turn gives you a rock chip. wax, many layers, will make the rock bounce instead.
3. yearly since 1994 vehicle paint has gotten worse n worse in protection and strength caused by chemicals, processes use to make it and the EPA cracking down on it all. Paint used to be chemicals, its nearly water colors now. Paint on a 2007 is 30% weaker than paint on a 2006, and paint on a 2006 is 30% weaker than paint on a 2005. Just gets worse n worse. So older the car, the better the paint is gonna hold up.
4. to take off the paint smear and any or all of the touch up paint you did. just get some lacquer thinner and clean it all off with a soft cotton cloth towel. just mind you, the towel will have paint on it so use a rag. after the lacquer thinner, just wax the area to reintroduce the luster.
5. if you do not want to try the touch up paint job. you may be able to contact the used car department of any dealership and ask them who they use for a mobile touch up paint company. these guys service the used car lots and make the used cars look new again. they also do retail this is what I do
6. since you mentioned heavy traffic of trucks, you may want to invest in a bug guard/shield for the truck. this will assist prevent some of the rocks from coming up onto the hood.
7. you can not over wax a car, you may be able to wax it every day for a year and all you'll do is build up protection. remember that. most think 1, two wax jobs a year is enough. six should be the minimum, more for the darker the color.
8. Honda's paint is super thin. So it does not "chip" but instead gets "salt and pepper". Meaning many tiny tiny chips. Ford Taurus, well they aren't around anymore and they're from the days of "good paint" if you may be able to call it that. So they're less prone to road damage. Dodge, they're brittle as glass and a fingernail alone will scratch the paint. Best advice, wax, wax, wax, wax and wax it some more. Meguiar's or 3M are the best polishes/waxes for retail market.
