Should I worry about snow and rain damage to my new Mazda MX five Miata's ragtop?
I live in Ohio, we do not have a garage. Do I have to purchase the optional hardtop?

The convertible will last about three five years if kept outside and unprotected. Sun or UV causes more damage than anything. Get a carcover or if you have th choice of to get the Optional Removable Hardtop, well get it. Best of both with that.
303 makes some nice merchandise for keeping a top in good condition, but the fact is the threads and materials will only last so long. With good care a Top can last ten years, easy.

They are constructed to withstand the weather but it would not hurt to purchase one of those weatherproof covers. They do not cost too much and since your car is smaller it should not be too much annoyance to put on and take off. The optional hard top is more so for safety/insurance than weatherproofing.

you may want to. constant contact to the elements will sooner or later wear out your convertible roof. plus, every time you open/close it, it puts more wear and tear on the material.
On a side note, it may be cheaper to put up one of those "temporary" car shelters, or just get a car cover.
