Should my coolant tank always be full?

Postby Desrucap » Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:23 am

I filled up the coolant tank thing, and went on my trip, halfway I checked it again and it was still full. But this afternoon I checked again and it was now only half full, but my mum opened up the radiator cap and it was full in that part. So is it ok? I don',t have to keep topping up the tank that connects to the radiator? Will I just overflow if I keep doing that?

LOL coolant tank thing.

dont worry about the radiator to much, keep an eye on the coolant tank it shud ever drop from its set level, when the engine is hot it'll expland and from 1/4 it'll go 3/4 of the tank when its hot so be sure you measure when its hot or when its cold, it shud have set markings on their for hot and cold engine. don't keep adding coolant like that if it needs more your radiator light will come on and add some to the tank don't keep doin the radiator.

Just keep one thing in mind heat rises and most coolant tanks are higher than the engine block and your radiator cap puts pressure on the system to help it circulate the coolant. The reservoir tank lets the engine to cool off faster and gives a safe access to put coolant in the system, while the engine is warm. To answer your question, The simplest way to check your coolant level is when the car is stone cold on back to back days, for a week if you must. you'll find two lines on the tank, one will read full, for operating temp. and the other will be for cold temp. The reason I',m telling you to read it cold, is because that's the best way to get an correct reading of the coolant level. It takes hours for a car to cool down and the whole time they',re cooling down, the coolant will be going back into the engine as it continues to cool, so to get a reading is a bit more hard.
