Did you ever overheat it? If so then you have a bad head gasket and a possible warped head.

Blue smoke is a sign of a dying engine.

Stop worrying about what the problem is, and get rid of it.

"tickover??" not sure what you mean by that but the blue smoke on startup means your gettin oil in the cylinders considering its only on startup im betting its the valves =

Hyundai hasn't used 2.0 engines in Sonatas for a long time. What year is it and how many miles does it have? Blue smoke is an indication of oil burning you're sucking oil past the rings. The smoke stops when the engine heats up because the rings expand with the heat. Hard starting could be caused by lack of compression. If it does need a ring job get a compression test they're fast and easy based on the age and mileage, it may not be worth doing it.

Blue smoke indicates burning oil....Oil gets into the cylinder in two ways: up through the rings or down through the valve seals.....Unless you're sucking a great amount of blow by into the throttle body, could also be blocked injectors, dirty throttle body, but doesnt sound good, sounds to me like the ol piston rings are nackered.

blue smoke is from oil to get burnt so start looking for something else to replace that junk before you get stranded
