Just engage the clutch when you're prepared to go, you may be able to leave it in neutral without pressing clutch while you idle at a stop light, and this prevents extra clutch wear.

"Gears for go, brakes for slow" Hold clutch in all the way when at a complete stop, if in gear, but, save your clutch & put it in neutral while at a stop/stopping.

you can just let the car idle with the transmission in neutral and your foot on the brake till you're prepared to go again, then you just depress the clutch and start off in 1st again

Push that cluth in pretty much generally when coming to a complete stop. you'll stall.
If you're new at it you may be able to be in fifth gear and push the clutch in then break to a complete stop, with clutch slip it into neutral, then to first while waiting to go, then do your thing.
Anytime your in trouble the clutch is a saving grace, it disengages the whole car from accelerating any more.

You only hold the clutch in when you are putting it in gear. Just be sure it is not in gear when you let the clutch out if you are at a stop.
