Just keep it maintained and it should last you another 200k. The Outback H six is great.

The Outback has a good dependability record. The 3.0L engine is recognized to be dependable. The AWD driveline is engineered and shouldn't require repairs. in general dependability, though not clean, is above average and there aren't really any big trouble spots. The biggest problem isn't so much the dependability, but the cost of parts, which is high.
As for experience with the AWD. I now drive a '96 Legacy wagon with 223,000 km, and I have fond memories many of them recent of winters where I have plowed effortlessly through snowbanks up to its headlights and up slick ice slopes too slippery to walk on. There are stories in the neighborhood where I live of other Legacies going up snow covered ski roads. pushing or pulling other cars that could not get up the slope. The winter and bad weather performance of Subaru's AWD system with good tires is F. I have not still been able to reach the limitations of what this car will do.
In terms of dependability, it is been excellent, particularly considering the severe weather it is been in for eleven years. I am anxious to see how far it'll go and plan on driving it to at least 300,000 km. Suffice to say that though it is received repairs outside of regular maintenance, I can count on one hand the number of times it is gone in unscheduled since it was new. No big engine, transmission, A/C or interior work was done, and drive train repairs have been restricted to two shock absorbers, one wheel bearing and one CV joint.

hi
I`m in the mid west of WA, bought an 05 Forester six months ago. have not driven the three litre, but jeez the 2.5 in mine has got some go. It has more power than a holden 2.5 V6. the reason I bought it was due to great stories I have been told about how good the AWD performs in soft sand & the like, and I wanted something we could take on the beach, that is not a tank like a Patrol, etc. have not done much off roading still, but it handles like a dream on the road.
Subaru, Honda and Toyota have been rated as the most dependable cars on Aussie roads..so hopefully we'll be ok. once I do some off roading in the subi I'll let you know how she goes.
