TBI to Carb swap?

Postby Voziiiii » Sun Sep 30, 2007 11:41 pm

The question is at the end, the begining is all background. I have an 88 C1500. It now has a TBI 5.7 350. The motor is shot and I'm gutting it and putting in a carbed turn key 383. This will not be a daily driver. I'm also replacing the tranny and the rear end so that isn't my biggest worries. I'm ripping out all accessories A/C, P/S, etc This is the start of a 1/4 mile truck. What I'm asking about is the fuel. am I supposed to keep the stock fuel tank and put in a new fuel pump or get a fuel cell that's already set up? Your ideas? thanks.

To add on, as far as a fuel pump goes, am I supposed to use an interior or external? Buzz B had a point with the rules of a "legal" track and a fuel cell.

get you a different fuel cell then an electric fuel pump, b&g makes really good high volume fuel pumps just for racing, far as the truck part goes its to damn heavy to start with go to a fiberglass body, they don't weigh more than some hundred pounds, which is better than trying to pull it down the track with a small block.also part the rear end and go to either a four link or a ladder bar set up, be cautioned how ever a ladderbar and four link is for basicly drag only, you don't wanna be taking any quick curves or turns of any kind, go to us body source for the fiberglass body as there not really all that expensive.. good luck on your build up,,

I could rip out the tank and install the fuel cell dude. If you're going all out you may also do that also. Plus it is simpler to get to if need be and you get to cut some extra weight also. Plus if you intend on taking it to to legal events they may require you have a fuel cell.

go with a fuel cell and drop that old rusty gas tank out.
The factory pump in the tank will flood a carburetor engine.
The factory pump in that truck pushes the fuel pressure threw the lines on a tbi setup at 28 to 31 pounds per square inch, that's too much for a carb engine, the pressure on that carb engine will be approx six nine psi max.
check around at the tracks and see where they want the cell mounted
Then go kick some asphalt with it.

personal I'd keep the stock fuel pump and tank unless your needs is a truck that you must trailer to the strip rather than drive it. Just hook up a regulator and or better a adjustable one. The guys at thridgenthe will also give you a hand if need be, seeing how there's lots of them that ditched their TPI/TBI to go to carbs. just use there search engine 1st then fire away with your question if you need more help good luck

I'd take benefit of the factory build in the fact that this one specification is better researched for safety then just about any other facet of design. place, strength and filler attributes all figure into safe operation at most speeds. Some extra mods are to allign strip specifications to this hard base of design. Heat insulation and spill evidence caps begin to deal with the factory deficientcies. many fuel taps at the tank will give you hard fuel delivery if carefully calculated and completely exploited inside the stock parameters of design.
