The answers people have given here are pretty good, but my guess is you're low on oil. Engines have a tendancy to burn oil if you drive them hard Stop and go traffic, high speeds . It does not mean your engine will explode or anything, it is just that lots of heat gets generated, and it vaporizes the oil in the engine.
When there's less oil in the engine, you get less oil pressure to the head, and your lifters do not fill up with oil. Hydraulic lifters are these little piston looking things that let the cams to open the valves. When they're full of oil, they take up all the space between the cams and valves and move power smoothly. When they aren't full of oil, there are gaps and the cam kind of slaps the top of the lifters, making that rattling sound you hear under acceleration.
Despite what the factory says about going five 10,000 miles between oil changes, you still have to check your oil level. I'm no saint, and drive pretty hard, so I burn on average of a quart every 1000 miles.
