The transmission on my 2003 VW Beetle looks to downshift hard when cold. is that normal?
I just bought this car and didn't notice it on the test drive, but when I 1st start the day and it's "cold" the downshift when braking is noticable. I was told it's an electronic transmission and that's normal. it has 65K miles. am I supposed to return it for a diagnostic or is this a normal thing?

The auto transmission on the VW is indeed electronically controlled, you will notice that when you shift from park to reverse or drive it may take a second or two to engage the gear, there's a software update to decrease the delay time for engagement.
However, the issue you bring up is a recognized issue, you want to be sure that the transmission has the new operating software update, take it to a VW service department or an independent that has the correct scan tool with software updates so that the computer may be checked and updated as needed. The short answer is yes, they tend to shift pretty harshly when cold, it should go away after a couple minutes of driving. If it does not then its either a software issue or there's an interior issue inside the transmission.
Hope this helps, a car nut.

I have an 04 Jetta GLI with an 02M six sp MT, and particularly when its cold out side it shifts really hard. don't run it to hard when its cold let it warm up a little.
