probably the ball joints or bearings. gm trucks/suv's have a problem with those.

yeah check the front suspension for looseness. Also if you feel the pop in the steering wheel, you may want to have the intermediate shaft checked also

I own a shop, and when is the last time you had the thing greased? Most ball joints will pop when they get dry, and so will the you joints. If you have a car that has CV joints in the axles, check to see if the boots on them are broken, and slung all the grease out of them.
