Tune up a Mazda Miata 2000, what am I supposed to ask? |
|
I'm going to take my miata for a tune up and not really sure what I should be asking needs to be done for a tune up, it runs good, but I'd like to take all the preventative measure I can so I do not f this car up. I bought it about six months ago.

have the mechanic hook it up to the computer, that will assist them find out what could happen if anything big is going on. and have them maybe change the fuel filter air cleaner maybe spark plugs based on mileage, that is a nice car GOOD LUCK TO YOU. also change oil of course and tranny liquid.

Automotive tuneups on modern cars are not really needed or possible in the old sense, car dealers like to push them because its profitable and people have it ingrained in their minds that its still needed. Today cars have fuel injection that does not get worn or gummed up like carburetors, electronic ignition that does not go out of time because there aren't points to wear out. All new cars are computer controlled and self diagnostic. When there's a problem the check engine light goes on, then you're practically forced to go to a dealer so they can read the computer, then most probably exaggerate the problem to sell you a ton of over priced parts installed at $90 an hour not as well as breaks . Spark plugs seldom foul and go 50K or more miles because the electronic ignition produces better spark and this burns cleaner then a weak spark that failed to adequately burn the fuel/air charge. This also keeps the plug clean. Today knowledgeable drivers are petitioning the legislature to make manufacturers make their car computers tell the driver what the problem is and what part failed when the check engine light goes on. So he or she can understand what the car needs to fix it and have their own mechanic fix it instead of the dealer. Cars are equipped with many sensors, actuators and controls which fail occasionlly and trip the check engine light. a loose gas cap can trip the light on some cars.
So what needs to be done? Go to your holders manual to learn how frequently the oil/filter need changing and kind of oil, when filters need changing air, fuel, pcv, crankcase vent filter, cheap and easy to replace, tranny liquid and filter, coolant, belts and TIMING BELT which can break, leaving you stranded and possibly damaging the motor. If your car is under warranty you must go to the dealer. But with only six months on it, there is not much to be done except an oil change, tire rotation & air pressure check and just a general look over. Have Fun, wished I had a Miata. Find a web site that's run by Miata holders and follow it. it'll keep you knowledgeable about your car. Every car type has own little problems and idiosyncracies.

It depends on the mileage. Ask for all the normal "tune up" things like plugs, wires, fluids. If you are over 60,000 you may need a new timing belt.
