GM "took it easy" for too long. They DID build crappy, unreliable vehicles for the longest time. but, that has all changed. GM is not a stupid company. They know what they have to do to get back on top and I bet they'll.. It just takes time. The playing field is becoming level these days with businesses like Hyundai building great vehicles.. GM will be good.. it is just going to take a bit more time for everybody to realize they are not building crap anymore.

it got so low because they make lousy cars. American car businesses can not compete with the Japanese and German auto makers. American cars are wrought with problems and aren't fun to drive and drink too much fuel.
GM is in trouble because the unions are screwing them over. They continue to pay for workers who not work there/retired. Their pensions are jacked and they pay top dollar for parts made by Delphi..
Delphi themselves just went bankrupt..only to be re incorporated in China or Mexico.

American cars are not good looking cars either. The only American car worth owning is a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette C6..but it will not bring GM back.

GM needs to fire all their workers and tell the unions to back off. The unions are leaches that like to suck on GM's wallet. it is already bad enough that GM really LOSES money on every car they sell.
They made only $1200 profit on each car throughout last years GM employee discount program.

I can honestly tell you, if Honda or Toyota did an "Employee Discount Program"..American auto businesses could be hurt so badly that they could shut down.
Everyone already drives a Japanese car..that could really put the nail in GM's coffin.

The only hope for GM is to get rid of all their American workers, the unions, move to Mexico, get rid of Saturn and a lot of other car lines that do not seem right.

Stop propping up losers like KIA motors in Korea and other European makes.

Focus on America because this is where people purchase three to four cars per family.

Unions are killing GM. The company is becoming nothing more than a giant retirement holding firm because unions muscled their way into absurd contracts with all American automakers.
The fact that GM cars are just plain boring and bland does not help matters. Who the hell at GM design stood back and looked at the 2006 Malibu and said, "ohh, man. I gotta have one of those.." ? Japan auto makers don't have to pay retirement benefits to their workers..they are paid by the govt. This really makes for a lopsided playing field but is still no excuse most 'imports' are made right here in the U.S. . Will GM survive? Only time will tell. If the general folds it'll be their own fault for a mass of reasons.
